Watch Hot Air Balloons in Cappadocia
Cappadocia, Turkey
Dozens of colorful balloons rising over a surreal landscape.
View on Google MapsWhy It's Epic
Cappadocia looks like another planet - otherworldly rock formations called "fairy chimneys," ancient cave churches, and underground cities carved into soft volcanic rock. But the iconic experience is watching (or riding) hot air balloons at sunrise, when up to 150 balloons fill the sky over this surreal landscape.
The flights happen at dawn when winds are calmest, lasting about an hour and drifting over valleys, rock formations, and villages. From inside a basket, you get aerial views impossible any other way. From below, the scene of colorful balloons against pink sunrise skies is equally magical.
The region also has great infrastructure for travelers: unique cave hotels, rooftop terraces with valley views, solid WiFi, and cozy cafés. Many digital nomads find it surprisingly workable.
Pro tip: Balloon flights cost $150-300 and often cancel due to wind, so book multiple days just in case. Even if you don't fly, watching from a rooftop terrace (many hotels have them) is free and unforgettable. The towns of Göreme and Ürgüp are the best bases.
