Visit the Great Wall of China
Beijing Region, China
Walk along one of the world's greatest architectural feats.
View on Google MapsWhy It's Epic
The Great Wall stretches over 13,000 miles across northern China - the world's longest structure, built over centuries to defend against invasions from the north. Walking along it, winding through mountains and past ancient watchtowers, you feel both the scale of human ambition and the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Near Beijing, you have several section options. Badaling is the most restored and most crowded. Mutianyu is well-preserved with fewer crowds and a cable car. Jinshanling and Simatai offer wilder, less-restored sections for serious hikers. Each section has its own character.
The wall is steeper than photos suggest - some sections have steps at 70-degree angles. You'll definitely get your workout. The views of the wall snaking over mountain ridges in both directions are the real reward.
Pro tip: Skip Badaling unless you love crowds. Mutianyu is the best balance of accessibility and atmosphere. Visit on a weekday and go early. The wild sections (Jiankou, Jinshanling) require proper hiking gear but reward you with solitude and authenticity.
