Visit the Grand Canyon
Arizona, USA
One of the most iconic natural wonders on Earth.
View on Google MapsWhy It's Epic
The Grand Canyon is just massive - 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and over a mile deep. Standing at the edge makes you feel small in the best way. The rock layers visible from the rim span nearly two billion years of Earth's history, displayed in bands of red, orange, and purple.
Most visitors see the South Rim, which is open year-round and has the most viewpoints and facilities. The North Rim is quieter but only open May to October. For the adventurous, hiking down into the canyon (Bright Angel or South Kaibab trails) reveals a completely different perspective, though rim-to-river hikes require permits and serious preparation.
Sunrise and sunset transform the canyon's colors completely - the shadows and light create a constantly changing landscape. Many people tear up when they see it for the first time; photos really don't prepare you.
Pro tip: Skip the crowded main viewpoints and walk a bit along the rim trail for better views and fewer people. Stay overnight to catch both sunset and sunrise - the difference is dramatic. Book lodges inside the park months ahead, or stay in Williams or Flagstaff nearby.
