See the Taj Mahal
Agra, India
A symbol of love and one of the world's most beautiful buildings.
View on Google MapsWhy It's Epic
The Taj Mahal is as beautiful as the photos - maybe more. This white marble mausoleum was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tomb for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth. It took 22 years and 20,000 workers to complete.
The building seems to change color throughout the day: pinkish in the early morning, brilliant white at noon, and golden in the evening light. The intricate inlay work and calligraphy become more impressive the closer you look - semi-precious stones form flowers and geometric patterns across the marble.
Agra is about 3-4 hours from Delhi by train or car. Most visitors come for a day trip, but staying overnight lets you catch both sunrise and sunset views.
Pro tip: Enter at sunrise when the crowds are smallest and the light is magical. The entry fee is much lower for Indian nationals, so expect crowds to build quickly after gates open. Friday is closed to tourists (mosque prayers). Bring shoe covers or go barefoot on the marble platform.
