Why It's Epic

There's something almost spiritual about seeing Machu Picchu emerge from the clouds at sunrise. This 15th-century Incan citadel sits at 2,430 meters in the Andes, surrounded by dramatic peaks and often wreathed in mist. When the clouds part and the ruins appear, you understand why it's on everyone's bucket list.

The classic approach is the 4-day Inca Trail trek, ending with sunrise at the Sun Gate overlooking the citadel. Permits sell out months ahead. Alternatives include the Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, or simply taking the train from Cusco to Aguas Calientes.

The site itself is remarkably well-preserved. Wander through temples, terraces, and residential areas built with stones fitted so precisely that no mortar was needed.

Pro tip: Book everything 3-4 months in advance - entry tickets, Inca Trail permits, and Huayna Picchu/Machu Picchu Mountain climbs all have daily limits. Spend a night in Aguas Calientes to catch the first bus up for sunrise entry.
