Marvel at Petra
Petra, Jordan
Explore the ancient rose-red city carved into sandstone cliffs.
View on Google MapsWhy It's Epic
Petra looks like something out of a movie because it literally is - Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade made the Treasury famous. But the ancient Nabataean city is even more impressive in person, carved directly into rose-colored sandstone cliffs over 2,000 years ago.
The experience starts with the Siq, a narrow canyon with walls towering 80 meters high. After a 1.2km walk, the Treasury suddenly appears through a gap in the cliffs - one of those goosebumps moments. But the Treasury is just the beginning; the site covers 264 square kilometers.
Beyond the Treasury, you'll find the Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, a Roman theater, and the Monastery (800 steps up, worth it). Most visitors only scratch the surface in a day trip.
Pro tip: Get a 2-day pass to explore properly. Petra by Night (Monday, Wednesday, Saturday) lights the Treasury with candles and is genuinely magical. Wear sturdy shoes - you'll walk 8-12km easily.
