Why It's Epic

Bagan at sunrise is pure magic. Over 2,000 ancient Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries spread across the plains, built between the 9th and 13th centuries. As the sun rises, temples emerge from the morning mist while hot air balloons drift silently overhead.

The archaeological zone covers 26 square miles, so you'll want an e-bike to explore properly. Unlike Angkor, there are no entrance gates or guard posts at most temples - you can wander freely through ruins that feel genuinely undiscovered.

Climbing temples for sunrise used to be the thing to do, but most are now closed to protect the structures. A few designated viewing mounds remain, or book a balloon ride for the ultimate perspective (about $350).

Pro tip: Rent an e-bike and get lost. The best experiences are often the small, unnamed temples you stumble upon alone. Sunset is equally beautiful and less crowded than sunrise.
