Explore the Galápagos Islands
Ecuador
Pristine wildlife and untouched beauty that inspired Darwin.
View on Google MapsWhy It's Epic
The Galápagos are basically nature's VIP lounge - animals here have no natural fear of humans, so you can walk within feet of blue-footed boobies, marine iguanas, and giant tortoises. Sea lions will swim right up to you while snorkeling. It's surreal.
These volcanic islands 1,000km off Ecuador's coast inspired Darwin's theory of evolution. Each island has slightly different species that adapted to local conditions. The ecosystem is heavily protected - you must visit with certified guides and stick to marked trails.
Most visitors either take multi-day cruises between islands or stay on one of the inhabited islands (Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, or Isabela) and do day trips. Cruises see more but cost more.
Pro tip: The Galápagos aren't cheap - budget $200-300/day minimum plus flights from mainland Ecuador. Book permits and popular tours in advance, especially for places like Isabela's Los Túneles. The warmer season (December-May) has calmer seas and better snorkeling.
