Experience the Pyramids of Giza

Standing in front of the pyramids is a total mind-bender. The Great Pyramid was the tallest structure on Earth for 3,800 years, built with 2.3 million stone blocks averaging 2.5 tons each. And they did it 4,500 years ago without modern tools or machinery.

The Giza complex includes three main pyramids, the Sphinx, and several smaller structures. You can go inside the Great Pyramid (extra ticket, cramped passages), or explore the surrounding tombs. The site sits right at the edge of Cairo - turn one way and you see ancient monuments, turn the other and you see Pizza Hut.

Sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit for photos and smaller crowds. The sound and light show in the evening is touristy but atmospheric.

Pro tip: Hire a licensed guide to avoid the aggressive touts, and agree on any camel ride prices before getting on. The Solar Boat Museum nearby houses a reconstructed ancient ship worth seeing.
